Hugo Esparza joined the Fort Worth Fire Department in January of 1975. He graduated from the Fort Worth Fire Department Academy on July 23, 1975 and was commissioned as a firefighter for the City of Fort Worth.  Since that time he has promoted through the ranks of Firefighter, Fire Engineer, Fire Lieutenant, and Fire Captain.  In February 1992, Fire Chief Larry McMillen appointed then Captain Esparza to his present rank of Deputy Chief.  He previously served as the departments Operations Deputy Chief and managed the Educational Services Division, which included the Training Administration and the Emergency Medical Services sections of the department.  In his current position as the Executive Deputy Chief.

Chief Esparza earned an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Technology from Tarrant County College in 1984. He then attended the University of North Texas where he graduated Cum Laude in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Administration and Planning. He recently received a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Texas Christian University.  He is a graduate of both the Command and Staff Program and the Executive Officer Program from the National Fire Academy located in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  In 1997, Chief Esparza completed the Public Affairs - Advanced Public Executive Program from Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona.  In 1999, he graduated from the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the prestigious John F. Kennedy School of Government located at Harvard University. 

Chief Esparza is a member of the North Central Texas Fire Chiefs Association, the Texas Fire Chiefs Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Protection Association, Forum Fort Worth, and a current member, and former chairman, of the Board of Directors for the Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Hugo Esparza is a lifelong resident of Fort Worth.  He attended M.G. Ellis Elementary, J.P. Elder Middle School and North Side High School.  He is married to Alice Esparza and has two sons – Patrick and Charles.
