Edith isn’t a person.  The letters E. D. I. T. H. stand for

            Exit

            Drills

            In

            The

            Home

Sit down with your family and draw out an exit plan.  Show 2 ways out of each room, such as a window and door.  Decide on a meeting place outside your home.  Test your smoke detector and practice your escape plan.

Ask your child to show you how to crawl under smoke and feel the door for heat before you open it.  Use the back of your hand.

Be sure everyone understands the first thing to do when your house is on fire is to Get Out and Stay Out.  Never go back inside.  Let the firefighters know if anyone is still in the house.

Firefighters are there to help.  Tell your child not to hide in a closet, bathroom, or under the bed.

What would you do if your clothes caught on fire?  Can your child show you how to Stop, Drop, and Roll to smother the flames?
