The Red Helmets is an organization of dedicated civilian volunteers that have been serving refreshments to the Fort Worth Fire Dept. for more than 25 years. Our membership is made up of citizens willing to give time and energy back to the community. Our focus is to provide meals, refreshment relief to emergency personnel. Our members are not trained in firefighting, although we are proud that some of the past members are currently serving with the FWFD, Careflight and other emergency service groups, as well as some current members are retired firefighters. The Red Helmets are on call all day, every day. We respond as requested by the FWFD, SWAT team, and other special assignments.

During drizzling freezing weather, wet raining nights and hot summer days, the Red Helmets will be responding. The alarm office will notify the RED HELMET dispatcher of an incident, who contacts the membership to respond. Some activities are also planned in advance, displays, airshows, and public events.

The Red Helmets are charged with operating various pieces of equipment: The canteen unit was constructed by the FWFD in 1988. This truck is equipped with heat/air, microwave, coffee machine, water, sodas, and other snacks as required due to weather. The canteen is the most active piece of our equipment. Portable Toilets, the Toilets are trailer mounted and easy to get to the fire scene, under tow from the Rehab 2 pick-up truck.  As requested, the Red Helmets provide a back up for the Rehab truck. We are able to respond to large grass fires and serve different locations.

Volunteering is a very rewarding. Our reward is knowing that we have helped our firefighters perform their important tasks. We all know that their THANK YOU is truly meant. Working with the Fort Worth Fire Dept. has allowed us to meet and associate with the finest group of people we know. Helping them out is a privilege not a task.
